What is a blocked account for?

A Sperrkonto is one way to prove that you can cover basic living costs while studying in Germany. The money is not permanently inaccessible; after arrival, you normally receive access within a defined monthly limit.

Use the correct 2026 amount

The official 2026 minimum for the study-visa route is €11,904 for a year. Different visa purposes can use different monthly or total amounts, and figures are updated over time.

Do not choose a provider only by price

Check whether the account is accepted for the visa process, how long identity verification takes, refund rules, support quality and how monthly payments will reach your regular German bank account. Delayed verification can put a visa appointment at risk.

There are alternatives

A blocked account is not the only possible proof of funds. Depending on your case, a recognised scholarship or declaration of commitment may also work. Confirm the accepted option with the relevant German mission.

Tip: before making an international transfer, double-check your name, reference number and bank instructions. Correcting a transfer can take valuable time.
