Who it fits

  • School leavers and final-year students
  • People who started a degree at home and want to begin again in Germany
  • Anyone deciding between German- and English-taught programmes

What is usually required

  • A higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). A school diploma alone is often not enough; a Studienkolleg year and the Feststellungsprüfung may be required.
  • Language proof: TestDaF or DSH for German-taught programmes, IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught ones.
  • Proof of funds — usually a blocked account; the amount is set by the Federal Foreign Office and changes each year.
  • Health insurance and a valid passport.

The route, step by step

  1. Find out what your diploma is worth in Germany (anabin / uni-assist).
  2. If a Studienkolleg is required, plan around it and raise your language level.
  3. Apply through uni-assist or directly to the university, and secure admission.
  4. Open the blocked account, take out insurance and apply for the student visa.
  5. Register your address in Germany, obtain the residence permit and enrol.
