Why the Blue Card matters
The EU Blue Card is one of Germany's strongest residence options for highly qualified employment. In 2026, the general gross annual salary threshold is €50,700. A lower threshold of €45,934.20 can apply to shortage occupations and certain recent graduates. These thresholds are updated annually.
Core requirements
You normally need a concrete job offer in Germany lasting at least six months, and the position must match your qualification. An academic degree or an eligible tertiary-level qualification is generally required. Under specific conditions, experienced IT professionals may also qualify without a traditional university degree.
Faster route to settlement
A major advantage is the pathway to a settlement permit. If the other requirements are met, Blue Card holders may qualify after 27 months of qualified employment with A1 German, or after 21 months with B1 German.
Changing jobs
If you change employers during the first year of Blue Card employment, you must notify the local foreigners authority. It may check whether the new position still satisfies Blue Card conditions.
Important: salary thresholds change each year, so verify the official amount immediately before applying.
