Sunday shopping works differently
Most shops in Germany are closed on Sundays. Train stations, airports, petrol stations and special shopping Sundays can be exceptions. If you shop on Saturday, check local closing times.
Learn the recycling system of your building
Paper, organic waste, packaging and residual waste often use separate bins. Glass is commonly taken to collection containers. The Pfand deposit system lets you return eligible bottles and cans through supermarket machines.
Appointment culture matters
Doctors, Bürgeramt services, banks and repairs often work by appointment. If you will be late, notify the provider. Some medical practices may have policies for missed private appointments.
Cash has not disappeared
Card and mobile payments are increasingly common, but some bakeries, markets, restaurants and local businesses still prefer cash. Keeping a small amount is practical.
Respect quiet-time expectations
Building rules and local regulations can include expectations around night-time and Sunday noise. Read the Hausordnung before using drills, loud music or other noisy equipment.
Adjustment tip: treat these habits as local operating systems rather than stereotypes; daily life becomes much easier once you know the rules.
