Start the search before you move
Childcare systems differ by city and federal state. You may see terms such as Krippe, Kita, Kindergarten and Tagespflege depending on age and care model. In high-demand cities, begin researching as soon as you know your future area.
Check the municipal process
Some cities use a central childcare portal; others require direct applications to individual providers. Address, employment situation, child's age and desired care hours may matter.
Compare more than distance
Look at opening hours, holiday closures, adaptation process, meals, language approach and parent communication. For full-time working parents, closing time can be more important than a small difference in travel distance.
Allow time for Eingewöhnung
Many childcare centres use a gradual settling-in period. A parent may need to stay at first, while the child's hours increase slowly. Avoid scheduling your first day at work and your child's first Kita day together.
Keep alternatives
During a waiting period, consider childminders, private providers or employer-supported childcare.
Practical goal: find not just any place, but a care arrangement that works with your child's adjustment and your family's real schedule.
