Do not plan to live uninsured
Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. The two main systems are statutory health insurance (GKV) and private health insurance (PKV). Not everyone can freely choose between them.
Employees usually see contributions through payroll
In statutory insurance, employee contributions are generally calculated from salary and shared with the employer. Your insurer issues an electronic health card used at medical practices.
Do not choose private insurance only for today's price
PKV can suit some people, but review the contribution structure, separate coverage for family members, reimbursement process and the rules for later returning to statutory insurance.
Avoid a coverage gap before employment begins
If there is a period between arrival and the start of work, check that your temporary/travel health insurance meets visa requirements. Official guidance stresses having health protection from the first day.
What happens at the doctor?
With statutory insurance, you present the electronic health card. Certain extras, prescription co-payments or optional services can still involve additional cost.
Rule: ask which system fits your residence, employment, family and long-term plans—not simply which looks cheapest today.
Where do you actually stand?
Answer a few questions to see which residence route fits your profile — or talk it through with a consultant.
