Track four separate setup tasks
After moving into a German home, internet, mobile service, electricity and the broadcasting contribution are separate processes. Do not assume they are all included in the rental agreement.
Ask about internet activation time
DSL, cable and fibre availability and activation times depend on the address. Run an address check before moving. A generous mobile-data plan can be useful as a temporary backup.
Mobile service requires identity verification
SIM activation in Germany requires identity verification, including for prepaid plans. Providers may use VideoIdent, PostIdent or in-store verification.
Check the electricity contract
Electricity is often separate from rent. If you do not choose a supplier, a default/basic supply arrangement may apply. Photograph the meter reading when you receive the keys.
Rundfunkbeitrag is generally per household
The public broadcasting contribution is generally charged per dwelling rather than per adult. If several adults share a home, one person's contribution number can be used for the household registration.
Setup plan: research internet before moving, photograph meters at handover, activate mobile service and complete the broadcasting registration once your address is established.
Where do you actually stand?
