What is a settlement permit?
A Niederlassungserlaubnis is an unlimited residence status with broad employment rights. The qualifying period depends on your current residence title and history.
General route for skilled workers
Current official guidance says certain skilled workers can apply after three years if they meet the additional requirements. These typically include secure livelihood, pension contributions, permitted employment, B1 German, basic knowledge of Germany's legal and social system and adequate living space.
Faster route for Blue Card holders
EU Blue Card holders can use facilitated rules. If the other conditions are met, a settlement permit may be possible after 27 months with A1 German or 21 months with B1.
Graduates of German education may have special routes
People who completed university or vocational training in Germany can benefit from facilitated conditions. Do not assume that one waiting period applies to everyone.
Collect evidence from day one
Keep payslips, pension records, language certificates, rental documents and residence permits organised.
Strategy: choose and manage your temporary residence with the long-term settlement route in mind.
