Treat the first month as a dependency chain
Many German setup tasks depend on earlier steps. Without address registration, banking, tax, residence and contract processes can become harder. The order matters.
1. Housing and Anmeldung
Once you have an address that can be registered, complete Anmeldung with the local registration authority. You normally need a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from the housing provider. Appointment systems vary by city.
2. Health insurance
Health insurance is mandatory. Confirm the model that fits your employment, study or family situation. Employers also need insurance details for payroll processes.
3. Bank account
A Girokonto makes salary, rent and direct debits easier. Depending on the bank and your situation, passport, registration evidence or residence documents may be requested.
4. Tax ID and payroll information
After registration, your personal Steuer-ID is generally sent to the registered address. Employers need it for payroll.
5. Residence and everyday contracts
If required, arrange your foreigners-authority process early. Then complete mobile, internet, electricity, transport subscriptions and broadcasting contribution.
First-30-days logic: address → insurance → bank/tax → residence → everyday contracts.
