Ausbildung (Vocational Training)

An Ausbildung teaches a trade over up to three years — part in the company, part at vocational school — and pays a salary throughout. No degree is required; what decides it is your German and finding a training contract.

§ 16a AufenthG

What is usually required

  • A signed training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) with a German company.
  • Usually B1 German; B2 may be asked for in care and customer-facing trades.
  • A school-leaving certificate and its recognition.
  • Additional proof of funds if the training allowance does not cover living costs.
  • School leavers who want a trade rather than a degree
  • People aiming at care, technical trades, hospitality or logistics
  • Anyone starting over in Germany with a lasting qualification in mind
