PhD & Research

A doctorate opens the academic and the professional door at the same time. What decides it is finding a supervisor and settling the funding — with a contracted position the process moves much faster.

§ 16b / § 18d AufenthG

What is usually required

  • A recognised master’s degree and admission to doctoral studies.
  • A supervisor or an agreement with a research institution; on the § 18d route, a hosting agreement.
  • Funding: a contract, a scholarship, or your own proof of funds.
  • Language proof matching the programme; many doctorates run in English.
  • Researchers who have completed a master’s degree
  • People who already hold a position at an institute or university
  • Post-docs and visiting researchers
